The AveTransRisk advanced search allows the user to construct complicated search criteria with which to query the online database. Below are definitions of the options available in the query builder:
Description of Equality Operators:
These allow fields to be matched directly to keywords and choices, or to return results that start with a keyword, or field values that are greater or less than a number:
- =
Matches the search field exactly
- Contains
Checks if the search criteria is somewhere in the search field
- StartsWith
Does the search field start with the search criteria
- EndsWith
Does the search field end with the search criteria
- Less Than (<)
For numbers or years only. Is the search field less than the search criteria
- Less Than or Equals(<=)
For numbers or years only. Is the search field less than or equal to the search criteria
- Greater Than(>)
For numbers or years only. Is the search field greater than the search criteria
- Greater Than or Equals(>=)
For numbers or years only. Is the search field greater than or equal to the search criteria
- IsEmpty
Is the search field empty
- Is Not Empty
Is the search field not empty

Number Fields
Number fields expect a number and can be used with the mathmatical operators (<, >, <=, >=, =)

Year fields expect a year in the format yyyy and can be used with the mathmatical operators (<, >, <=, >=, =)

Description of Text Fields:
Text fields can be searched using text typed directly into the query buider:
Averages
- Averages (number)
The number of averages that a case has. Use the mathematical operators (=, <, <=, >, >=) to search this field. The search input MUST be a number.
- Average sentence date (Year: yyyy)
The year that the sentence occurred in. Must be a year in the format yyyy. - Num. of days to complete procedure since report written (Number)
The number of days that the port authority took to complete the calculations since the report was initially written.
- Num. of days to complete procedure since report presented (Number)
The number of days that the port authority took to complete the calculations since the report was initially presented to them.
Calculus
- Calculus description
Enter words contained within the calculus description, or use the 'is Empty' or 'Is Not Empty' to find cases where a calculus was present. - Calculators
A list of names of the people who performed the calculations
- Calculus written date (Year: yyyy)
Enter the year within which the calculus was written.
- Calculus approved/presented date (Year: yyyy)
Enter the year within which the calculus was approved/presented in.
Damages/Expenses
- Damages/Expenses
Enter words to match the description of any recorded damage or expense.
- Damages awarded date (Year: yyyy)
Damages awarded may be different to the damages claimed. Enter the year within which the awarded damage was calculated. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
Events
- Event location
Enter words to match the description of the event location
- Event date (Year: yyyy)
The year in which the event occured. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
Fleets
- Commander
The name of the commander of the fleet, if the vessel was part of a larger convoy/force.
Insurance
NB. The section on Insurance is only used by the French sources.
- Insurance date (Year: yyyy)
The year of the insurance/loan policy. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
- Insurance declaration date (Year: yyyy)
The year the insurance/loan was declared. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
Legs
- Port arrival date (Year: yyyy)
The year within which the vessel(s) arrived at the port.
- Port departure date (Year: yyyy)
The year within which the vessel(s) departed from the port.
Litigation
- Litigation
Search the litigation field or use the 'Is Empty' or 'is not Empty' to find records that either had or did not have litigation.
Master
- Master's name
The name of the master of the vessel.
Merchants
- Merchant who ordered cargo
The name of the merchant who ordered the cargo.
- Merchant who bought cargo
The name of the merchant who bought the cargo.
- Merchant who received cargo
The name of the merchant that received the cargo at the destination port. - Number of Merchants (number)
The number of different merchants involved in the case
Metrological observations
- Metrological observations
Search the metrological observations field or use the 'Is Empty' or 'is not Empty' to find records that either had or did not have any observations.
Reports
- Reports: written date (Year: yyyy)
The year the evidence was written in (testimoniale, consolato, relazione, etc). Must be a year in the format yyyy.
- Reports: presented date (Year: yyyy)
The year the evidence was presented to the authority. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
- Number of reports in the same voyage (Number)
The number of reports present in the source material for this case.
Risk to Cargo & Freight
- Risk: Cargo
The year within which the vessel(s) arrived at the port. - Risk: Cargo - Number of Items (number)
The number of items of cargo recorded for this voyage
- Risk: Freight
The freight charge that was paid by the merchants.
Trials
NB. The section on Trials is only used by the Spanish sources.
- Trial petition date (Year: yyyy)
The Trial petition date. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
- Trial calculus date (Year: yyyy)
The trial calculus date. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
- Trial appeal date (Year: yyyy)
The date of the judicial appeal. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
- Trial judgement date (Year: yyyy)
The appeal judgement date. Must be a year in the format yyyy.
Vessels
- Vessel name
The name of the vessel
- Vessel tonnage (Number)
The vessel tonnage. This must be a number and the mathematical operators can be used
Voyage
- Extra information from the source material
Enter words here to search against any other information about this voyage
Witnesses
- Witness name
The names of those who witnessed the writing of reports

Description of Choice Fields:
Choice fields present a list of options (from the database) to search against.
Archive
- Archival Source
A list of the archives where the source material is kept.
Averages
- Average type
Grossa/commune (General Average) or Semplice (Particular Average).
Damages/Expenses
- Damages/Expenses - Currency
The type of currency used for the Damages/Expenses. E.g. Pezza da Otto, Scudi, etc.
Events
- Event type
All events have one or more types. E.g. Storm, Hostile Encounter, etc.
- Event category
All event types have one or more categories. E.g. Weather, Enemy. By using this field, you can search for all events with event types of a certain category. Good if you are interested in just 'Weather' events.
Fleet
- Fleet type
If the vessel was part of a larger number of ships sailing together, what type was it. E.g. Convoy.
Leg
- Ports of call
A list of all ports visited in the database.
- Port origin
A list of ports where the voyage started.
- Port destination
A list of ports where the voyage finished. - Port forced stop
Ports where the vessel was forced to stop due to events that took place at sea
Master
- Master's role
The master's role. E.g. Captain or Patrone.
- Master's nationality
The master's nationality. - Master's nationality - modern day country
The modern day equivalent country nationality that the master would have been.
Reports
- Reports: where written
The location where the report was written.
- Reports: written in front of
The authority that the report was written in front of.
Risk - Cargo
- Cargo type
All items of cargo are give a type so that types of cargo can be searched. E.g. Grain.
- Cargo category
All cargo types have one or more categories. E.g. Food, Textiles and Precious Metals. By using
this field, you can search for all cargo of a certain
category.
Vessel
- Vessel type
The type of vessel. Eg. Barca, Galleon, Nave, etc
- Vessel's flag
The county denoted by the vessel's flag.
- Vessel tonnage units
The units used to describe the vessel tonnage. E.g. Mine
