Author: Henry Burton

Categories: Charles I
Dedication
Notes: Author given as 'H.B.' on title page; the dedication is signed by Henry Burton; see also ODNB entry for Burton. 10-page dedication addressed 'To the High and Mighty Prince, Charles, King of Great Britaine, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c.' The work is a response to Richard Montagu's 'Appello Caesarem', which had also been dedicated to Charles I [see STC 18030]. Montagu had argued that the elect could possibly fall away from grace; Burton's more hard-line Calvinism insisted that only the elect were saved and that this was unalterable [ODNB]. In the dedication, Burton therefore accuses Montagu, amongst other things, of 'exalting Arminianisme which His sacred Majestie [i.e. James I] so much detested' and calls upon Charles to execute justice against enemies of the Church.
