An Edinburgh re-print of a speech that was first printed in London also in 1603 [see STC 17510]. The speech was delivered at Stamford Hill and was published with James I's assent [ODNB]. Elizabeth I is compared to 'great Augustus'; James described as 'that bright starre of the North'. A version of the speech was published in 1643 [Wing M848; Thomason's copy is dated February 8], 25 years after Martin's death and 18 years after James's. In that version, the names of Elizabeth I and James have been cut out where they occur in the original, perhaps so as to give the impression that the speech was a loyal address to Charles I. |
