Quotation: [I, 1840-48] Hardy's mother:"grew to be exceptionally skilled in, among other things, 'tambouring' gloves; also was good at mantua- making, and excellent in the oddly dissimilar occupation of cookery."
Notes: Hardy's mother was a type of dress maker, which is interesting, particularly with the view to this research, in the way he uses clothes to illustrate his books, they are in themselves the fabric of the stories. Presumably because he was brought up around them they became part of his psyche in a way that they would not necessarily to other people.
