About the VMBA photographic archive

This photographic archive forms part of the VMBA project based at Exeter University. For more information visit the VMBA project page in main Exeter University web site.

At present, the archive contains photographs of sixty-four Aramaic incantation bowls from the Schøyen Collection (JBA 1 to JBA 64). These first 64 texts were published in S. Shaked, J.N. Ford and S. Bhayro, Aramaic Bowl Spells: Jewish Babylonian Aramaic Bowls Volume One (Magical and Religious Literature of Late Antiquity 1; Leiden: Brill, 2013).

This site is currently undergoing renovation. Photographs of the bowls from the Frau Professor Hilprecht Collection of Babylonian Antiquities, Jena edited in James Nathan Ford & Matthew Morgenstern, Aramaic Incantation Bowls in Museum Collections, Vol 1: The Frau Professor Hilprecht Collection of Babylonian Antiquities, Jena (Magical and Religious Literature of Late Antiquity, 8; Leiden: Brill, 2020) will be made available once the renovation is completed.

The photographs in this archive have been placed on the VMBA in order that scholars can have free access to them and use them for non-commercial reasons, i.e. for private research and in the classroom for educational purposes. For any other use, including publication, permission must be obtained from the copyright holders. For more information see copyright and permissions.
