Plaques, St Mary’s Church (Henlow, 1989 and 2007)

John Tilley and Joan Hurst married in this church, and their daughter, Elizabeth, was also baptised there along with John’s nephew Henry Sampson; all journeyed on the Mayflower, but only Elizabeth and Henry survived the first harsh winter.

In 1989, the Pilgrim John Howland Society erected a plaque in memory of the Tilley family (Elizabeth had gone on to marry John Howland). In 2007, the Pilgrim Henry Samson Kindred erected a plaque to their namesake’s memory.
