A shipment of sumac, dried lemon peel, and other merchandise loaded in Augusta and inteded for Genoa. The vessel left Genoa in late summer 1717 arrived at Augusta in the early autumn. After a two-month stay in Augusta, the vessel left the port on 20 January 1718 under serene conditions. The following day the vessel enountered a violent storm with strong north and north-east winds off the coast of Taormina, creating stomry seas that threatened to engulf the craft. With the deck continually swept and the safety of crew and lading in doubt, the captain took refuge in Syracuse, where he rode out the weather until the end of the month. The vessel resumed its voyage on the morning of 31 January and reached Reggio Calabria at midnight, where the crew obtained provisions. They departed on the morning of 2 February with a fair north wind. The following afternoon, off the coast of Capo Licosa, a second storm struck the vessel with strong north and north-east winds accompanied by a very stormy sea, and the vessel was overwhelmed by waves that lifted the stern and forced the bow underwater. This resulted in a breach of the hull and an ingress of water into the bilges, soaking the bales of sumac and crates of lemon peel, rendering a portion of the cargo unsaleable. The crew, fearing the total loss of ship and their lives, sought refuge at Baiae, before shifting into nearby Pozzuoli on the evening of 3 February to make a testimony for damages.
