The voyage of the La Maddonna del Rosario

A shipment of ten barrels of vinegar, twenty?eight packages of mixed fruit, and other merchandise loaded in Livorno and intended for an unspecified port. The ship cleared Livorno on the evening of 15?September?1718, steering east?south?east for Portoferraio on Elba. Before dawn the next morning, a sudden west/south-west squall kicked up a stormy seas off the coast around Monte?Grosso, forcing the vessel onto submerged rocks. The impact breached the hull and snapped structural timbers, scattering barrels and baskets: two barrels of vinegar, much of the fruit, and part of the hull planking disappeared in the surge. The crew cut away the wreckage, then carried the mast, yards, standing and running rigging, eight salvageable barrels of vinegar, several crates of fruit, and sixty?seven pieces of unidentified goods onto the shore. The breach of the hull resulted in the crew abandoning further refloating efforts, and they made their way to nearby Terra?di?Rio to deliver a formal testimony for damages before the local governor and the elders, detailing the gale, the wreck, and the partial recovery of cargo and gear.
