The voyage of the San Giacinto e Le Anime del Purgatorio

A shipment of 450 'cantares' of Sardinian cheese, hides, goat skins, coarse 'broccio', and an old copper cauldron, all intended for delivery to Bastia and then Genoa. The witnesses testified that after leaving Erbalunga (in Corsica) the ship arrived without incident Olbia (Sardina) where the cargo was loaded. On 4 December 1719, the vessel departed Olbia in company with another vessel commanded by Giuseppe Medori, but was soon separated during bad weather and rough seas near as it approached Corsica. By the morning of 11 December, the ship found itself alone approximately 35 km off the Corsican coast and sought refuge in the port of Favone, where it remained for nineteen days due to persistent storms. On 29 December, the vessel again set sail with another vessel , but worsening conditions forced them to anchor that night near the Fiumara della Poraggia. The onshore winds and increasingly stormy seas caused the foremast of the vessel to break, and the hull began to take on water rapidly despite efforts to secure the ship with all available anchors and to bail the flooding holds. During the night, with the vessel filling uncontrollably and sinking, the captain and crew abandoned the ship. Simone Angeli, aboard as supercargo, prohibited anyone from salvaging the cargo or hidden funds—reportedly 6000 lire in coin stored beneath the stern—hoping to recover the goods once the storm subsided. But by 18:00 that same evening, the vessel broke apart entirely and no recovery possible. The crew returned to Bastia by land  and made testimony for damages on 2 January 1720.
