A shipment of various merchandise loaded in Genoa and Livorno and intended for Civitavecchia, Naples, and Ancona. In the early evening of 13 July 1719, the vessel, departed from the vicinity of Livorno with a westward course, and at approximately 22:00 that same evening, as the ship approached the waters off Castiglioncello, it encountered a corsair vessel flying the Spanish flag. The corsairs hailed the Genoese vessel and demanded obedience, ordering a boarding party to inspect the ship. The patron complied and presented the bills of lading, which indicated neutral Genoese and Livornese ownership. The corsair captain nevertheless accused the vessel of carrying goods potentially destined for enemies of the Spanish Crown and proceeded to seize both the vessel and all merchandise aboard. He placed his own crew on the Genoese vessel and forcibly diverted it back to the port of Livorno, where the goods were unloaded under duress.
