Copy of an order to Fulad Khan about flight of landlord Narsu Sethi and his refusal to pay a sum of cash

The landlord (desai) Narsu Sethi refused to pay 100 coins to a cavalryman who had received a tax-free revenue assignment (jagir) and fled from the town of Solapur. On account of this, the district officer Fulad Khan is ordered to reassure the inhabitants of the town.

3نایب غیبیت معامله سندلاپور آنکه هر چه عریضه او بمتوقف
4عرض رسید انچه در مضمون ان درینوقت بالا نرسو بن میگ ستهی
5دیسای مبلغ یکصد هون برات میان علا بخش بن جمال الدین
6ملتانی جمع رکاب جاگیر دیوان اعلی صادر شده است چون
7این خبر نفر مذکور شنیده بیدل گشته از دیه بیرون رفته و
8بواسطه این معنی مردم قصبه مذکور از رعیت بقال و بعضی قوم قصبه
9خالی کرده رفته اند اهتمام فرمودن باز دیده بود بتمام
10روشن شد چون حال بدین منوال باشد معلوم دانند و
11سایر مردم قصبه را تقویت و دلداری داده قصبه معمور
12نمایند درین باب اهتمام بواجبی نمایند بر حکم فرمان همایون روند

2A royal farman was issued. To the great khan Fulad Khan,
3naib in absentia of muʿamala Sandlapur [Solapur] [know] that his petition
4was presented with [some] delay. The contents of which [state that], at this time, Narsu [Sethi], son of the desai Meg Sethi
5has been issued a berat to pay the sum of 100 hons to Miyan Ala Bakhsh, son of Jamaluddin
6Multani, a cavalryman holding a jagir from the Exalted Diwan. When
7the aforementioned person heard this news, he was frightened and left the village.
8And on account of this event, the people of the aforementioned qasba, including from the population of merchants and some of the community of the qasba,
9have vacated and departed. The supervision of orders had been investigated.
10It became completely clear [and] he [i.e. Fulad Khan] should make it known when the situation had taken this shape.
11And strengthening and reassuring the remaining people of the qasba he should make the town
12prosperous. In this matter, he should take appropriate care. He should implement the order of the royal farman.

6son of [Jamaluddin] Multani.
7Because of this event, the population of the qasba
8became frightened and have left.

2. The calendar type is not specified in the document but it is most likely this date is a suhur date and the date on the verso is given in hijri years. Taking this to be the case, both dates correspond. [BACK]

3. While the literal meaning of the word सुरू, or suru, is "beginning," "started," or "proceeding," its meaning as an official mark in the context of registering Persian orders is still unclear. The Maratha rajas of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries maintained a position called the surnis, whose role in recording state documents likely involved applying this mark. [BACK]
