James I Dedication Pamphlet Elizabeth I |
Notes: | Pricket's name does not appear on the title page; the dedication is signed Robert Pricket. 2-page dedication addressed 'To the Most High and Mighty Prince James by the grace of God, King of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, defender of the Faith, &c.'. Pricket wishes for James 'Salomons wisedome, Davids heart, and Joshuas courage'. The main prose work is entitled 'A Souldiers Resolution'. It celebrates Elizabeth I's rule, attacks Catholicism, and hopes for peace and unity in the church under James I. The attack on Catholicism may have been intended by Pricket to prove his loyalty for he was suspected of some involvement in the pro-Catholic activities of Philip May and was questioned about this on 19 April 1603 [ODNB]. |
