Notes: The words 'By the King' are printed at the head of the sheet. 'Given at the Court at White-hall, the seventeenth of May'. Charles claims to be touched by shows of affection from subjects who have come to court to see the new king, but proclaims that he must 'dispence with those publicke shewes of their zeale, chearefulnes, and alacritie' because they may spread plague throughout the country.
