Charles II Letter |
Notes: | Letter is dated January 23; it was read in Parliament January 26; Thomason copy dated January 27. 1 letter, written in response to a letter of January 14 sent from the gentry of Devon to William Lenthall requesting the re-admission of the secluded members [Wing L1464]. Monck argues that, because Parliament must comprehend a variety of civil and spiritual interests, the readmission of monarchy is not advisable. Roger L'Estrange responded to the letter on January 28 [see Wing L1313A]. The letter was re-printed in 'A Collection of Several Letters and Declarations' [see Wing A840] alongside other letters by Monck, including one to Charles Stuart date 31 December 1659 in which Monck pledges to help restore Charles. |
