Notes: Thomason copy dated April 19. Laments the death of Charles I in 1648/49 but published in 1660. Date of composition is difficult to establish. The author writes that 'Now without a Shepherd we do stray', suggesting a date shortly after the king's execution. The final line, however, hopes that England will soon be sent 'our dear Shepherds Son', maybe reflecting the hopes of defeated Cavaliers in the 1650s but maybe, in April 1660, alluding to Charles's imminent return. Engraving of Charles I's body lying in a mausoleum with Latin inscription above and below: 'Virtus post Funera vivit' and 'Mors mihi lucrum.'
