Description
In 1970, the influence of the Tercentenary was large enough to be felt in places that had no real claim to the Mayflower story. In Coventry, this even extended to local planning and street names. As reported by the Coventry Evening Telegraph, the 'Pilgrim Fathers, who sailed to America in the Mayflower 350 years ago, are to be commemorated on a new private housing estate in Coventry'. The main estate road was named 'Mayflower Drive' with various cul-de-sacs after some of the passengers on the Mayflower: Carver Close, Brewster Close, Allerton Close, Crackston Close, Standish Close and Billington Close.
The idea for the street names apparently came from Alderman R. A. Bradbury, after he had visited Plymouth and 'was given a brochure of the Plymouth plans for celebrating the 350th anniversary of the voyage of the Pilgrim Fathers'.
