Mayflower celebration, Wordsworth Hall, Penrith (November, 1920)

Description

The 300th anniversary celebrations at Penrith – a far cry from the Mayflower’s southern and midland roots – were presided over by the Chief Constable of Cumberland and Westmorland, Colonel Turnbull of Barton Hall, Penrith. Like other small-scale celebrations, this one involved speeches and singing of hymns. The celebration was interdenominational, involving representatives from the Presbyterian, Congregational, Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan communities, though no Anglicans seemed to have attended. The interdenominational celebration would have ensured a good turnout for the day.
