About 40 miles from the Isola di Porto Tavolaro, at 3 hours, a storm arose with a gale from the west and south-west and high waves. Around 7 o clock, 60 miles from Monte Argentario, the storm had worsened and the waves were passing from one side of the ship to the other. At this point the necessary consulation was made with the sailors and they began to jettison cargo into the water, beginning with the small boat, whose motion was upsetting that of the vessel, then the oven, some nets, two barrels of water and some empty barrels, an old rope, and sailors effects. This being insufficient they turned their attention to the hold and jettisoned 400 fila of cheese, some leather, a barrel of salted tripe, eight barrels of tuna, eight sacks of orso, five sacks of ‘parte’, a big cable, half a bale of deer’s hide, a barrel of melagrana and a horse which had died during the tempest, as well as some other stuff. They were trying to head east, because they were worried about running onto the land, and under the force of it the foremast broke. |

| Transcription: | Al sabato mattina a ore tre di giorno che trovandosi in Golfato circa a quaranta miglia allo mare lontano dal Isola di porto tavolaro si move una burrasca a segnio di ponenti e libecci con mare grosso e venti gagliardi che fu forzato ponere li due tregi per resistere a detta tempesta e verso le 19 ore del detto giorno essendo sopra al monte argentario 60 miglia in circa allo mare si alte con la burrasca vento e fortuna di mare cosi galgiando che l’onde del mare trapassavano la detta Tartana da Banda a Banda con gros pericolo di annegarsi per il che fatta la debita consulta con li suoi marinari che si allegerisse detta Tartana per potere ristere alle fortune di mare e di venti e coi seguitando il viaggio verso le 19 ore di detto giorno principiorno a buttare a mare e prima [tagiorno] lo schifo che portavano da Poppa con una agumine nuova e quello gettorno allo mare perche dava fastidio al vascello con il suo palamento di valore in tutto di 90 [di?] in circa il focone tre pezzi di tremaggi, dua botte di acqua barili secchi una gumine vecchia et altri stipi di marini e non bastando questo fu messo mano alla stiva e buttorno da fila 400 di formaggio quoia circa a 100 una botte di trippe salate, un cavallo morse per la fortuna, otto barili di Tonnina, otto saccha di orso cinque saccha di parte una corda rande et un barile di melagranato mezza balla di pelle di cervio et altre robe et essendo vicina la notte dubitando non investire in terra fecero il pelegrino invocato prima firma accio li provedesse di giuditio e cosi respiro di mollare alla volta di levanti per resistere alla detta fortuna et per fare gran forza si roppe l’albero del trincehtto e si squarcorno le vele di esso e cosi tutta la notte aminorno et il giorno seguente che fu domenica li 28 del mese giunsero nel porto di Gaeta |
