Description
Like others organised by the Free Church Council, Bradford’s celebration for the Mayflower anniversary in 1920 was to be fairly modest with much emphasis on preaching and lecturing. But early reports were good for Bradford. By May, months before the scheduled October celebration, Bradford had secured an appearance by the celebrity preacher Dr Charles Brown. Described as a “lion of London”, Brown had been a popular preacher at Harringay’s Ferme Park Baptist Church for thirty years. Though admittedly Brown was “not a frequent visitor to Bradford”, he had many local admirers and his making an appearance at Bradford’s Tercentenary celebration would surely cause a stir, especially since neighbouring Halifax, Wakefield, Huddersfield and other towns in the West Riding of Yorkshire were also making plans “to celebrate fittingly one of the greatest events in the history of freedom”.
