Event 10051

Details of the event

Description
Three corsairs attacked the ship. They were large, described by one witness as having between 36 and 40 guns each. One bore the sun on its flag, another the moon, and the third a horseman. A fierce battle ensued which lasted for 5 hours, damaging masts, sails, rigging, and ropes. Several sailors were killed and others injured, including the captain who lost his leg. The ship was low on ammunition and would certainly have been taken if the armed escort had not arrived and saved the ship.
