The Dutch ship Principe Enrico Casimiro was heading from Ismir to Amsterdam accompanied by a Dutch ship of war, with scheduled stops in Messina, Livorno and Cadis. Seven or eight days out of Ismir the ship was upon the Sapienza in a calm sea, when three ships came upon them, Barbary corsairs, thought to be of Tripoli. After five hours of combat the ship was running low on munitions and would have been taken had the ship of war, held up thanks to the calm weather, not arrived in time to save her.

The merchant ship suffered damage to the masts, yards, shrouds, ropes and sails, and the cannon shot made breaches close to the water line. Several of the crew were killed or injured with the captain losing his left leg. The Principe put in at Zante with the help of the ship of war, and the captain made a consolato at Zante. The ship then resumed its journey. About 50 or 60 miles from Messina, and 10 or 20 miles from the Sicilian coast, the ships encountered bad weather, with wind from the North and North West, then shifting to winds from the East. The ship was forced to do what its escorting warship was doing so as not to lose her. Several times they tried to take the road to Messina but it was rendered too difficult by the weather.

When the arrived at Livorno the weather was too strong to moor at the Spiaggia and so the ship was forced to go to the bay of La Spezia instead. At this point, thanks to the effect of the great storm a great quantity of water was entering the ship and reached as far as the powder room, despite efforts to bail out. Eventually the ship made it to Livorno was the captain made another consolato.
