The ship Mercante Fiorentino was heading from Brindisi to London with a cargo of oils. It was anchored at the Livorno beach (i.e. not within the port proper) awaiting the right weather to continue the journey. During some heavy weather, with winds from the south and south west, the English frigate anchored next to it, the Zaffiro, began to drag its anchor and head towards the Mercante Fiorentino.

To save his own ship from being shipwrecked in the event of a collision, the captain cut one of the anchor ropes and let the other one loose. Through the means of this action the collision was avoided. The captain deployed the spare anchor, but this broke under the force of the storm, as did the next anchor which was deployed. Deprived of anchors, the master decided to head for safety at the mouth of the basin.

The ship was stuck there and in order to free it it was necessary to unload cargo and then reload it once the ship had been freed. The expenses claimed in the Average were principly those surrounding this last incident, the sums paid to little boats used in the impromtu unloaded, lent equiptment for this purpose which was damaged, and ‘gifts’ to the captains of warships which had helped
