The ship Tre Re, with the Flemish ‘Giovanni di Giovanni’ as captain, was freighted to transport grain from Ancona and Sinigaglia to Livorno. A few days after setting out they encountered a storm near Cavo Festozzi with north-easterly winds. The crew were set to bailing out and they took in all sail to avoid being pushed onto the land. However, with the storm increasing and being at risk of capsizing they captain made a very large jettison of grain after the necessary consultation with the crew. But the jettison was not enough, and the captain saw that the crew had abandoned him as they were convinced that at any moment the ship was going to go over.

At this point he considered cutting all the masts of the vessel and letting everything go over the side, but before he decided not to effect this plan because he noticed that the wind was abating somewhat. The storm lasted two days, and they navigated with difficulty for the next six days. They had to pump out water from the hold, and the water was mixed with grain, suggesting damage to the remaining cargo. When they reached Monte Cristo there was another storm with winds from the west, and the crew were forced to bail out again, and once again the water was mixed with grain. Two days later they made it into Livorno where the captain, as soon as he had his license to enter the port, made his consolato.
