The Madonna di Monte Nero set off from Caglieri in mid-June with a cargo of cheese bound for Livorno, setting off at 2 o clock in the morning. At ‘cala porto’ they waited for two days and then continued there journey. Near Cala Porto at the ‘Volta della Gugliarda’ they noticed many sails in port and smoke rising from the tower. They headed towards land and asked what the news was. The Castellan reported that two Turkish ships had been sighted in the area so they waited until the next day until they heard that the Turks had departed. From there they set out in the direction of Gugliarda and sailed happily for a day and a night. At midday the next day strong southerly and south-easterly winds arose, and the ship headed for Corsica to try to escape the worst of the weather.

They sailed for a day and a night before a storm broke with winds from the west and lightening. They were forced to take in the sails and go where God wanted them to go. The master wanted to try to head for the bay of Civita Vecchia but the weather did not allow it and they were forced to run towards the bay of Salerno. Seeing that they were not able to resist the storm, the captain held counsel with his seamen and they decided to make a jettison, beginning with a new hemp rope of four cantara and two new ropes, the ship’s oven, oars, planks and other things that were above deck.

They waited two or three hours before laying a hand on the things below deck but as the storm was increasing in strength, with winds from the west and north-west, they were forced to jettison some of the things below deck as well and they jettisoned 50 or 60 cantara of cheese. There was water in the hold all the way up to the cabin at the stern, and all the provisions they had to eat were ruined. They then made a further jettison of about a third of the cargo. In the morning they found themselves out at sea about 50 miles from Monte Circello. The storm began to calm itself a little. They were still not able to make sail but they managed to arrive in the port of Anzio where the captain made his consolato
