The small ship Santa Caterina undertook a voyage from Cagliari to Livorno with a cargo consisting almost entirely of cheese. In the straights of Bonifacio (that between Sardignia and Corsica) they encountered a storm with westerly and north-westerly winds. They were about 50 miles from land and were forced to run before the wind for 25 or 30 miles.

After a consultation they carried out the first jettison – ships equiptment and then some cheese. They then stopped for two hours but thanks to the blows of the waves were then forced to continue the jettison. They then took shelter by the island of Ponza and stayed there three days. They made an improvised consolato signed by the vice-castellan of the tower there. They then continued there journey for Livorno where the captain made his consolato.
