Wesley Chapel, Clasketgate, Lincoln (1920)

Description

Well-attended meetings were held in the afternoon and evening at Clasketgate Wesley Chapel in Lincoln to mark the 300th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage. Upbeat talks were given by the Revs. Walter H. Armstrong, F.J. Harvey, and F. Luke Wiseman, all of whom emphasised the historical, moral, and political aspects of the Mayflower story. Particularly interesting was Rev. Armstrong’s assertion that, in 1620, the Dutch brought slavery to American, while England had sent the Pilgrims. The latter went on to build the Commonwealth, suggesting, as he concluded, that “Democracy must be the outcome of the Christian faith”. (The Dutch, of course, were equally Christian, and the British equally amenable to slavery.) After more talks in this vein, the Mayor proposed a resolution in favour of the establishment of a League of Nations, which was carried unanimously.
