The ship La Madonna di Monte Nero was anchored off Livorno beach after arriving from Smyrna undergoing a period of quarantine. During the night a strong northerly wind arose and one of the two anchor ropes was broken.  At this point the ship began to drag its anchor. The spare anchor was then thrown. After daybreak, a second anchor rope broke and the ship began to drag anchor again with danger of capsizing. The crew were forced to bail out the water using the pump. New anchor ropes were fetched from Livorno, but the little boat that brought them collided heavily with the ship, causing some damage to the little boat.
