Litigation
This case occassioned the intervention of several parties. The captain requested a curatore to look after the interests of absent merchants. The court appointed a Doctor Michele Moneta who made several objections high on bombast and low on specific criticism. Three representatives of the Jewish nation in Livorno presented a series of 'eccezioni' one day after the merchants were cited to hear the consuls sentence. Nine days later there was also a representation by merchants on behalf of the Armenian community requesting the involvement of the court assessor. There are a very large number of both Jewish and Armenian merchants listed on the calcolo. The exact outcome or impact of these represenations is impossible to gauge, but we might note that the reduction in the amount claimed and the amount eventually awarded by the Consuls is very large - 57%. We might also note a delay of approximately two months between the raising of these objections (11/03/1669 and 20/03/1669 respectively) and the eventual awarding of the sentence, suggesting that negotiations were ongoing off the record.
