Litigation
Gilles, Disman, Estien and Depuin complain to the consuls in Pisa that their goods have been overvalued for the purpose of the average. An extract from a letter from the agent in Smyrna, translated from Flemish, is produced as evidence that the cotton that they have on the ship (valued at 88.11.5 in the Calcolo) is in fact of much poorer quality than is claimed. There is no way to tell for certain whether this complaint was upheld and whether the value represented in the calcolo is a revised total or whether this was the original total which was allowed to stand. The original case, to which this is an addendum, was the subject of a very protracted legal struggle when the merchants petitioned the Grand Duke for revision of the original average made in Messina and subsequently ratified in Livorno.
Extra information from the source
Note that this is a request for a readjustment. The original GA was adjusted in Messina, and the captain simply asks that a few extra items, that were not recorded missing thanks to the uncomplete unloading at Messina, be put into the GA. This is duly granted. There is thus no consolato, just a brief testimoniale e domanda document.
