Letter Jowell to Straw on Iraq's Cultural Heritage 2

FOI543.pdf

In this letter to Jack Straw, Tessa Jowell gives an update on the measures that have been taken to protect Iraq’s cultural heritage given the increase in concern since the looting of the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad. While steps were being taken to improve the security in Basra, she hopes that amnesty can be held there to help in the return of the artefacts. The next steps would be recovering looted antiquities and monitoring the international art market. To help the Iraqi people conserve their heritage, the ORHA would need to be staffed. Lastly, Jowell alerts the foreign minister towards the British Museum conference occuring on 29th April which will help in drafting a long-term strategy for assistance.
