Letter Jowell to Straw on Iraq's Cultural Heritage 1

FOI549.pdf

Following her last letter, Tessa Jowell gives Jack Straw an update on how the British Museum conference proceeded. She reassures him of the full support of the international museum and archaeological community to assist the people of Iraq in protecting their cultural heritage. She then lists three takeaway messages from the conference. The first was the concern over artefacts leaving the country through unprotected borders. In this regard, she requests Straw to speak with the US. The second was the issue of the aftermath of the end of the sanctions and the worry that there will be no diminution of control over the import of Iraqi cultural property. Lastly, Jowell writes that tensions had risen when the US troops’ refusal to intervene to stop the looting came to light. This had led the people from Iraq to prefer working with the British Museum-led and UNESCO-sponsored alliance of museums.
